"It's the economy, stupid," is the catchphrase of James Carville, former advisor to former US President Bill Clinton, which has become a household word. Perhaps we can paraphrase it less vulgarly: when we talk about politics, we talk about the economy. This is always the case, as a country's economic situation fundamentally determines its public mood and discourse, as well as the room for maneuver of its political actors. In recent years, Hungarians have felt the effects of economic difficulties directly on their skin - and of course on their wallets. We only need to think of the huge inflation in 2023 or the very weak exchange rate of the forint, while most of the EU money taps remain closed and the government is postponing large-scale state investments one after another. Viktor Orbán sees the future in "economic neutrality" and financing alternatives outside the EU - but how viable is this path?
At Republikon Institute conference, we will discuss with economic experts and representatives of domestic political parties what Hungary's current economic prospects really are and what individual political actors can do in this situation.
